Wedding Trends To Look Out for in 2022 | By Most Curious Wedding Fair

Oh dear readers do we have an absolutely treat for you on this cold winter Saturday! An absolute corker of an wedding trends inspiration post put together but the queen of trends herself, the lovely Becky of Most Curious Wedding Fair. She has shared with us today the wedding trends that she believes are going to be big for 2022 and, if past years are anything to go by, she will be right! This is why we love Most Curious – not only is it full of so many talented suppliers but it is also a hub of wedding inspiration too where couples often find ideas that get their own creative juices flowing!

From gender neutral tailored suits to big florals, stationery that features illustrations and meaningful embroidery (on all aspects of your wedding attire) – Becky has covered so many fantastic trends here as well as little teasers to some of the AMAZING suppliers you can expect to see at the 2022 show too. My goodness are we excited by the line up! You will see from the suppliers that are featured here (look out for the ‘see them at the show’ prompts) that Most Curious 2022 is proving to be the event that must not be missed for any couple planning a wedding. Bring it on is all I can say!

1) TAILORING

• 

It’s all about the tailoring in 2022. All genders, all body types the tailoring is coming through. Lines are sharp and cut in a considered way. Main muse though – 70s white suit queen Bianca Jagger – wanna add a hat and big hair, well that’s even more 2022 darrrling. Go to brands Jan Si (come see them at the show!) and Bon Bride.

1b) Colour Popping Suits

Those in the suits ain’t shying away for 2022.

Shiny, Shimmery, Patterned, Floral, Cord – the suits are wild and free for next year and we don’t hate it.

1c) Nostalgic Dapper

Prep school, historical feels – are we trying to do the roaring twenties that was promised to us?? High waists, knitted sweater vests, wide pants, boaters and braces. Embellish that jacket and bring it on.

Key Players Orhan Tailoring (at the show!), Steven Stokey Daley, Shannen in their black suit by Joasis Photography marrying their Gabrielle and Harry Styles in Gucci, say no more.

1d) Hybrid Styles

The age old story of as always, a vibe created and championed by Black and Brown LGBTQIA+ communities since for forever first, with a figurehead of Billy Porter, and is now being seen filtering through into a wider audience. A hybrid look that incorporates a feel of a gown, a suit, a jacket and a skirt all in one – made for all bodies!

Harris Reed nailed this with their Spring 2022 reveal earlier this month.

Isabel Zapardiez is making moves in wedding fashion with this, as is our exhibitor Somebody Else’s Guy (see them at the show!)

2) FAUX FUR AND FEATHER TRIM

The Clueless, 90s vibes of feather and faux fur trims also reign supreme for the coming year of weddings – led by Rixo, Daily Sleeper, Act Label. A soft and floaty feel that brings movement, texture and warmth to the otherwise minimal and clean cut looks that are trending.

People doing this whole vibe big are Whinnie Williams and her Groom AND Bridesmaids (dreamy!)

3) FILM PHOTOGRAPHY

Undoubtedly one of the strongest and one our favourite trends is the resurgence of film photography for wedding images.

Very brave but with very beautiful results. That heart warming nostalgic graininess and other-worldly dreaminess that film photography brings. The unexpected and unpredictable-ness of the exact moment the film will capture and also how it will process it… is priceless.

4) ILLUSTRATION FASCINATION

Whether it’s impossibly cute drawings of the couple or actual live drawing of scenes and people at the wedding – illustrative elements are making a come back for 2022 weddings!

From realistic watercolours, to relaxed stylised illustration, if it’s hand drawn or has that feel, you might just see it feature in next year’s wedding stationery, paper goods, or happening in front of your eyes at the wedding itself!

We loved the piece Kim Myers created for our 2022 campaign and are excited to see Name and A Dress’ work at the show – love the piece they created for Zeena and Zach. Really enjoying the styles of Emma HJ Yuan of EY Illustrations and Cherie Jerrard.

5) BIG FLORALS

Perhaps a hangover from pandemic weddings, where everything had to be scaled back and people went a bit ‘eff it’ with the flowers! Throwing left over budget into florals and just thinking, how can I still indulge me and my surroundings with extra vibes in a way that I am allowed. Food, cake, drink, dancing, all felt weird to get lavish with, but FLOWERS! Flowers became the way to feel special.

And we’re glad they are hanging around! Big floral and foliage installations, kicked off perhaps with *that* Benjamin Wheeler image of Princess Beatrice’s wedding with Rob Van Heldon Floral Design – and actually have always been a big part of luxe African and Asian Weddings but often of the silk flower variety – are gonna be a feature of many 2022 big days. Backdrops, installations, free standing, arches, overflowing from surfaces like rogue meadows – all of that.

6) PERSONALISED MENDHI (HENNA)

To check in on what the cool kids are doing when it comes to Asian Weddings, we just had to ask our resident Brit-Asian love birds Mush Studio who got married this year after many Corona set backs. One half of Mush is Kushiana who talks us through her hot 2022 trend tip!

“One tradition with Mendhi is always to have the grooms name hidden in the design somewhere. However these days a lot of brides are opting for totally personalised henna designs, sometimes with portraits of the couples woven into the design, or elephants or even typography! Its another way we’re seeing peoples individual styles shown through these traditions. I personally went for a mix of styles, both fun and traditional which included hearts and smilies as well as our initials in the centre of my hands!

Also we’ve seen a lot of the male guests/family wearing mendhi now which is awesome!”

7) RELAXED, ARTY ICING!

Ok quite specific, but after the hero trend of 2020 and 2021 being the tight piped Korean buttercream nostalgic icing style celebration cakes, the piping bags are getting a little looser, a little more chill, with squiggles, frills and brushstroke feels. Whether that’s impressionist style flowers, or actual free flowing pillowy wavy lines, soft zig zags, the hand is light and the icing is soft. We like!

8) HAIR TRENDS BY BRIDES BY AINA

For Hair Trends we consulted fantastic Black hair stylist Brides by Aina, who has worked with some of the coolest couples this past year, so we wanted to know what she sees developing as the big trends for Natural or Curly Brides and people for 2022! Thank you so much for your confidence boosting and super style-savvy words Aina!

“When it comes to picking a bridal hairstyle as a natural or curly bride it can be a mind field and although it is changing slowly there is still sadly a lack of bridal hair inspiration and to add to that you have that very annoying voice in the question in the back of your mind asking should I straighten my hair for my wedding day??….well the clear answer to that is NO and if i was next to you i would give you a shake, and tell you do not underestimate your natural hair aka your secret super power because if you manage natural/ textured/curly hair on a everyday basis you are Already a superstar for going against what social tell us is beautiful so carry on winning and invite your beautiful curls, kinks and coils to your wedding. To help you with a little inspiration here are a few bridal trends we foresee for 2022.

Defined Curls

• 

We all want naturally beautiful defined curls when we take our hair bonnets off in the morning but that is not reality for most of us with textured hair. We have to put the work in for the curls to be defined and looking all perfect, as unfortunately we did not wake up like this. As much as we desire these curls we all know this takes a crazy amount of time. Depending on the volume, densities and length of your tresses the time can span from anything from 1 to 3 hours or more to define the curls. It took me 3 hour to create Zoe’s look but every minute was worth it when looking at her end result, what do you think?. You can use product or heat to get your curls defined to your liking, just make sure you factor in the time on your big day. If you are going to use heat please always use a good heat protector and a good anti frizz serum to help with the humidity and then enjoy floating around on your wedding day with picture perfect hair.

Braids and Shells

• 

Brides express their personality from their dress to their bouquet right down to their shoes so why not allow your hair to be an expression of who you are. This style is absolutely everything it is so beautiful, and creates a whole vibe on its own. There are 3 parts to this style, you have the cornrows creating a gorgeous pattern , the volume in the back which can be created with your own hair or if you want the drama to continue you can add some tracks, crochet braid or not least those stunning shells, are added to create a whole other dimension to this beauty style.

Curly Low Bun

• 

I understand if you are a curly bride you have to dig a bit deeper to find some inspiration for but do not despair, inspiration is at hand. Having natural curls you are already in a great position because the texture and curl pattern is already there and all that needs to be done is for them to be defined and getting the curls looking their best for their walk down the aisle . They can be defined with products or heat to show off your curls in its best light, the world is your oyster after the curls are defined and anything can be created from an updo, half up, half down to the classic low bun with the defined curls doing all the talking. A curly bride can not go wrong with a loose low bun. It really is a staple for curly brides but to add a little something extra while not adding a flat twist to the front or a few plaits across the low bun to jazz it up. Allow some curls to frame your face and then just like that you have a stunning textured curly low bun ready to give you even more confidence to go and marry your best friend.

To sum up, natural, afro, curls, coils and kinks are so versatile and the above pictures are just a little sample of your hair, is capable of doing so brides-to- be looking for inspiration, do not be afraid to get creative, experiential or make your own hair trends for 2022. Natural hair is still finding its feet in a world that tells us that natural hair is not so cute, so show the world how cute your kinks, coils and curls can look by embracing them and inviting them in all their glory to your wedding day.”

9) CHILLOUT ZONE

A quiet area for your wedding is becoming an intentional thing, rather than a space people tend to find and create on their own. Not least because it’s just nice to lounge for a bit where it’s less intense, noisy and sweaty (!). But also because people are purposely putting this in place for neuro-diverse guests, for whom a quiet, minimal stimulation area, with all important wifi and head phones, to combat the overwhelm is so essential.

10) MEANINGFUL EMBROIDERY

Embroidery veils are really coming into their own, and remain strong in 2022 with even meaningful symbols and words. From favourite song lyrics to important dates, to illustrations of your pets – sewing these motifs are being added to the day, not just on veils, but on the dress, whether slightly hidden inside or prominently and even on the tables cloths and napkins. It’s a feature we love to see and love the subtle and the impactful styles equally.

Lauren Mizon is a big name for 2022 with the embroidered veils as well as Rebecca Anne Designs. And newbies on the scene Silk Hearts who will be at the show too!

Lovers Thread adds her hand embroidery to dresses and ribbons for an extra dreamy factor.

Our fave Nicole Chui applies her embroidery art to existing images as well as clothes, so makes for super cool embroidered invites or keepsakes too.

Ink and Thimble wows with her sewn love letters adorning, well, just about everything, and French Designer Sarah Espeute is a constant inspiration on the embroidery tablecloth front!
