Fun 70’s Inspired Wedding with a Modern Twist

We are bringing in the weekend with a gorgeously fun and stylish 70’s inspired same sex wedding styled shoot featuring real life couple Kimberley and Molly and a wonderful team of UK suppliers. With bridal looks that are bang on trend (those earrings are giving us all the feels), a venue that matches the retro vibe, gorgeous flowers in rich autumnal colours, a beautiful retro cake inspired by 70’s interiors and not one but two photographers – this shoot is ticking a lot of our boxes!

Tahnee of Electric Lovers Weddings, the clever lady behind the styling and concept of this shoot, says…

I took inspiration from the colours of the decade including earthy tones and bright pops of colour. Style icons such as Bianca Jagger, whose style was unconventional and cool, were a huge inspiration for bridal wear. Paired with the bold florals, a super modern venue that draws inspiration from the art studios of Shoreditch, retro decor and an incredibly gorgeous couple who ooze fun, made for an inspiring shoot incorporating some of the coolest modern wedding trends that (our couples) Festival Brides fans will love.

Love love LOVE! This is a shoot where the theme within each and every element has been executed perfectly, resulting in images that elevate the fun, energy and chemistry of Kimberley and Molly and the different backdrops the venue has to offer too. We also love that two photographers were used with very different but equally great editing styles, adding variety to the shoot and illustrating to couples how the same scene can be captured in an entirely different way depending on the photographers unique style.

The Concept…

The brief; to create an inclusive, fun wedding styled shoot inspired by the colours, interior style and fashion of the 70s, with all the modern feels. To do this I brought together a team of epic suppliers with a similar ethos who create modern weddings for fearless couples. And with all suppliers having full creative freedom and bringing their individual styles, the outcome was stunning!

The overall vibe of the shoot and ensuring it felt authentic was really important. We wanted it to feel true to the theme, but also playful and relaxed, whilst creating an urban city party vibe which London is so famously known for. Kimberley and Molly brought all the good vibes and had so much fun with it, dancing their way through the shoot (yes, they are both also professional dancers), and creating so many perfect moments, which Katie and Ginte, our photographers so beautifully captured throughout the shoot.

Hair…

Vicky totally kept in line with the brief, for the hairstyles for the shoot; a 70s vibe with a modern, effortless twist. Soft, relaxed waves for Kimberley, a modern take on the big waves reminiscent of the hairstyles of the 70s and a little movement and texture for Molly.

The satin knot headband as seen on Kimberley is a piece created by The Lucky Sixpence and Ness Bridal, and added a super chic feel to the overall look. Janie from The Lucky Sixpence says “However you style it, my headpieces come to life because of your authentic vibe,” this was definitely the case on the day! Kimberley was rocking it.

Makeup…

Laura from Crown and Muse ethos; makeup that celebrates the individual and highlights their natural beauty. Laura took inspiration from style icon Bianca Jagger, who never looked anything less than effortlessly cool.

“I wanted to create a makeup look that was timeless and effortless. Keeping the tones neutral and the textures matte gave the modern twist to bring it into 2022”.

Flowers…

For the shoot Katie wanted to focus on the bold colours and shapes of the 70s decade, creating a full tablecape and two sculptural, contemporary bouquets. Katie’s designs are imaginative, unstructured, and artistic, and she works with nature to sculpt beautiful, textural, statement florals. Her creations for the shoot went beyond anything I could have imagined. Incredible!

Stationery…

Forgoing an obvious 1970s theme for this bespoke stationery suite, LongLiveLove opted instead for a fusion of Studio 54 glamour with Art Deco elegance. Think Bianca Jagger, Roxy Music and Ossie Clark kinda vibe. Arched lines, geometric patterns with popping orange and russet reds, complemented by pistachio green. The look and feel was further influenced by the stunning interior of the super cool Moor and Mead venue.

Bec brought her incredible artistic skills to the table and created a suite of stationery that was super cool! I particularly love that she brought in the interior of the venue including the arch walkway, which featured throughout her designs!

Cake…

Verity loves creating bespoke, out of the box designs. “If it can be imagined, it can be made out of cake!” Her 70’s style shag cake was exactly that; Inspired by interior style, specifically the deep pile rugs of the 70’s free-loving era. She blended the 70s arch pattern, over both cake tiers and used the classic rusty orange colour palette as throwbacks to her favourite decade.

Earrings…

Stella takes her inspiration from nature, mainly flowers and things she sees around her. She draws on her love for bright, vibrant colours and working with different techniques and materials to create stunning pieces! She had fun with the process and chose earthy colours reflective of the decade to create a number of stunning bespoke pieces worn by Kimberley and Molly.

Venue…

Hosted by Bar and Restaurant Moor and Mead, located within Montcalme East which is found right in the heart of London’s creative and innovative district, Shoreditch. The venue was the perfect setting for the shoot, with its earthly hues and thoughtfully designed spaces, with a cool interior that is reminiscent of decades past. We made use of their photography studio for some really fun polaroid inspired images too.

Bridal wear…

The look was inspired by the effortlessly cool and ultimate 70s style queen Bianca Jagger. This would not have been a 70’s shoot without a statement suit and I knew exactly who to turn to, to bring this shoot to life! Not only does Melissa, creator of Crazy in Love Bridal have an endless array of on trend, fashion forward pieces on offer, she is incredibly passionate about redressing the imbalance in the wedding industry. Aligning with my values and that of the shoot, I knew it was a match made in heaven! We opted for a wide leg trouser and tailored blazer, along with an absolutely banging jumpsuit. Both worn with pre-loved platform shoes from Vinted, Kimberley and Molly were rocking the 70’s vibe and looked absolutely stunning.

Kimberley and Molly…

Gosh what can I say, Kimberley and Molly are so incredible and were perfect for this shoot. As soon as I saw them on Instagram after a recommendation from Ginte, our shoot photographer, and the utter love they show for each other I couldn’t look any further! They are also loads of fun and incredibly talented individuals. All words below straight from Kimberley and Molly.

“We’ve been together almost 7 years this year and it still feels like 7 minutes. We’re not just a couple, we’re best friends, soul mates and business partners. We run a dance company together called Unapologetic! A safe space for everybody to express themselves unapologetically with no judgement or fear. We met in an audition (well, Kimberley met me) I didn’t notice Kimberley until the after party in GAY bar soho. We were matched together by a friend in the bar and the rest is history… it was love at first sight. We do EVERYTHING together now, we’re inseparable!! We moved in together after 6 months of knowing each-other, it was the best decision we have made. We have set our life up in London, working, creating and living our dreams together.

You may recognise us from the TV adverts- McCains, Smart Energy, Very and Libresse. We feature together a lot on TV, in music videos, commercials and other creative things. Our job is client facing, it requires a lot of energy and socialising. In our spare time we love going for long walks, going away on adventures for the weekend to new places, drinking amazing coffee and connecting with nature and love!”

Photography…

Katie Sweet honed in on her real to life style, with an intimate feel through deepening the darker tones. With full creative freedom she edited how she wanted to and we were all so pleased with how this turned out. Katie said,

“The 70’s vibe was incredible, you don’t often see bolder colours at a wedding and Tahnee did an amazing job bringing the vision to life. Her concept created a fun, inclusive, retro shoot which I was so honoured to be a part of!”

“The aim of this shoot was to replicate the 70s feel, which I was achieving through both styling and editing techniques. Inspiration drawn from polaroids, overexposed flash images, captured moments defining celebration / free-spirited life. Editing techniques include polaroid like colours to enhance that nostalgic feel.
