Husband and wife team Liam and Hannah of Malyn Edit Photography recently joined our festival wedding directory and they couldn’t be the more perfect fit for Festival Brides. Their photography style, which they describe as being for the ‘adventurous souls, free spirits and boho dreamers,’ is beautiful and carries so much drama, romance and storytelling in each and every image. We love that they are inspired by travel and nature (which by the way are two of our favourite things) and we also love that they have so much passion for what they do…..

As part of our Festival Brides Love weekly feature, we asked Hannah and Liam all about how they got into photography, what drives their creativity and what they can offer you both for your wedding.

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
We are Hannah & Liam Malyn and we wanted to create The Malyn Edit Photography for adventurous souls, free spirits and boho dreamers who love to stray from the traditional. We met 10 years ago at the University of Stirling and bonded at the Sports Centre. We were competitive with each other then and we are still highly competitive now, particularly when comparing our photos. After starting out as best friends, the universe had other plans and we finally got together and tied the knot last year. When we’re not behind the camera, we’re usually dressed head to toe in lycra on our road bikes trying to beat our PB’s, or seeking exciting new locations for couples shoots. We are based in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, but love to travel the world (next stop Florence) and will go wherever our couples take us. We also spend a lot of time in The Lake District, where Liam is from.
If you had the chance to go to any music festival, which one would it be and why?
We have spent many years at Leeds Festival as it’s on the doorstep of where Hannah grew up (hello cheap tickets), but we would love to go to Wilderness Festival (hello paddle yoga), or Kendal Calling (hello to the parkland we got married in).
What made you decide to get into wedding photography?
For many years it has been Hannah’s dream, but she never quite had the confidence to do it until we got married ourselves. After going through the wedding planning process we thought let’s just do it, life is too short! Having used photography as part of the marketing day job for a while, we took it up a notch and went to college for a higher level photography course alongside a few weddings to practice on and it went from there, we made it happen. Liam decided to come on board and second shoot as we love the idea of being able to travel together and allow our couples to get the most out of the day as we can be in two places at once. It’s great to have another person to bounce off creatively and get the best out of our couples.
How would you best describe your photography style?
We’re all about natural light, fun and adventure. We will document your day as it naturally unravels. No posed photos here. We’ll probably suggest going to the nearest mountain, lake or woodland where we can explore and get those killer couple shots. We are ultimately inspired by travel and the natural wonders of the world. Pair this with a couple wildly in love and there really is nothing more romantic, or beautiful in our eyes.
What do you love the most about capturing weddings?
The fact you can feel so much love and joy throughout the whole day. We love the fact that we are the ones to help immortilise the emotion forever and capture exactly how everyone is feeling. There is no better buzz than that. We also enjoy wedding styling immensely so we are always so excited to see what our couples have been busy planning and how it has all come together; the theme, the colours, the dress; we love it all.

Some dreamy couple shots and some relaxed candid guest shots that really tell a story
Tell us about the different packages you offer?

Posed Family Photos, Yes or No?
Yes, although we stay away from posed photos, we do think it’s a must to have 1 or 2 family group shots as it is the one time that you are often all together. We recommend no more that 5 group shots.
If our readers were to book you for their wedding, what sort of service can they expect?
Once booked, we are there to support our couples in the wedding planning process as we love detail and have been through the planning process ourselves. Any questions about anything are welcome – hair, make up, colour schemes, the venue…anything at all. We can also give you some great recommended suppliers we have worked with. We always arrange a Skype chat, if we can’t meet in person, before your wedding day to have a good chat about your plans and timings to make sure we won’t miss anything and to understand what is important to you in terms of photos from the day.
We aim to have your full wedding gallery ready in 4 weeks, with an online gallery that you can share with friends and family and a USB box with a few printed images.
What do couples need to consider when they’re choosing a wedding photographer?
Most importantly you need to have a connection with their work, you should have an instant reaction as to whether their photography style speaks to you. You need to consider if they suit your wedding style and most importantly do you get along with them, because they are going to be a huge part of your big day. The more you get along the better your photos will be as you will feel relaxed and will be able to have fun.
