The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, makes me want to move my dancing feet! Oh yes I am feeling the summer vibes this morning. How lucky are we! I know I say it every week but seriously, I feel like I am living in a different country at the moment and it’s just an awesome feeling. I hope you are all enjoying it too. What a relief for those of you who are planning an outdoor wedding for this year. You couldn’t have been more blessed with the weather and I hope it is taking some of the pressure off.
We have a very cool styled shoot to share with your eyes this morning. Not only is it inspired by my all time favourite film, True Romance, it also features a gorgeous real life couple, some cool wedding florals (the bouquet and tropical ceremony set up is giving me all the frills this morning) and a colour scheme that is perfectly matched to today’s sunshine. It is bold, fun, inspirational and has a cool, almost menacing, romantic edge to it that we love.
The shoot was captured at the very cool Kim Sing Theatre in Los Angeles by wedding and lifestyle photographer, Siouxzen Kang of The Dream Choice and features real life rocker girlfriend and boyfriend Rae Okino and Bobby Saint. Although Rae and Bobby are not yet engaged in real life, I’m pretty sure this styled shoot is foreshadowing things to come!! Their chemistry is epic and they just look so so good together.
Look out for the ‘you’re so cool’ nods to True Romance in the stationery, the hand-painted ‘Mrs’ wedding jacket, the amazing cake and the decor and styling that has been inspired by the bold personality and fashion of Miss Alabama Worley. Love love LOVE.
A Converted Movie Theatre, A Pink Suit and Alabama Style…..
Words by Siouxzen Kang
The theme for this shoot was loosely based on the cult classic romance film “TRUE ROMANCE”. It is not unlike your typical love story. A rush of adrenaline and endorphins running through your body for the one you love. It’s edge and romance, lust and love packed in one. It’s bold and something different.
My idea came to me as I was searching for inspiration for my styled shoot. I love thinking of classics that brides could relate in an atypical way. I am from the “festival world”. My friends and I have been attending festivals such as Burning Man since early 2000’s and even birthed up with one of west coast’s largest visionary festivals Lighting in a Bottle. How can I relate to my community that are all in the age bracket of tying the knot. I wanted this shoot to be bright and funky and I thought of Clarence and Alabama and how their love was somewhat menacing.
The venue, originally a vaudeville theatre built in 1926, felt like the perfect place. The place is bright and bold in itself with it’s deep orange sunken in living room. It has an outdoor courtyard with beautiful tropical foliage accents that I was able to incorporate this within the theme. It was an old movie theatre along with it’s own marquee! I was able to use the famous quote from the movie and have them put “You’re so cool, you’re so cool, you’re so cool” onto the signage. It’s a perfect place for an intimate gathering of your closes family and friends.
The inspiration is of course from Alabama Whorly. She is romantic yet bold! She’s edgy and punky. I wanted to use her fashion sense of mixing prints and bright colors like turquoise and hot pinks but still keep the romantic feel. The place was moody and gave just enough light to highlight.
The styling for this shoot all started with my real life couple models first. Musicians Bobby Saint and Rae Okino were my muse. I went to Top Shop one day and saw this amazing pink suit that I just HAD to have on Bobby Saint. Everything else was based around his suit. I found a custom hand-painted leather jacket designer Once Upon A Lauren who even created a jacket based on my moodboard and theme for this shot! Everything just fell into place. The brides shoes were these funky Alexander Wang heels that were like shiny beetles. Rae had a pink wash in her hair and the dress we borrowed from Bride LA was a perfect halter cut to accent Rae Okino’s hummingbird tattoos.
The decor was a collaboration of the floral designers, Jessica Amascual and Patrice Veyna of Vavé Studios, and my rental friendors. Doing styled shoots like these is such an amazing opportunity to work with some vendors that you might not have had the pleasure of working with before. Jessica and I wanted to collaborate together and she came up with the colour and theme of the florals off my moodboard. I then found Vintage Owl Rentals for the beautiful sweetheart chairs and then to top it off my tableware vendor MTB Event Rentals. It just all came together. It’s fun to go and find things from the vendors inventory and piece together what the end reveal will look like.
